COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri women's swimming and diving team remains undefeated after defeating Northern Arizona University by a score of 123-75 in Flagstaff, Ariz. on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers, who are in the middle of their Christmas training trip, broke three pool records on Thursday.
The 200 medley relay team, consisting of Sarah Lo, Mariona Costa, Becca Dawson and Tara Brooks, kicked off the meet with a victory in a pool record time of 2:02.19. The reason the winning time seems so slow is because the meet was swam in short course meters rather than yards. Dawson came back later to break the pool record in the 100 butterfly (1:04.63) and Costa won the 100 breaststroke in a pool record time of 1:13.72.
"I am really happy with the way we performed today," said Head Coach Brian Hoffer. "Considering we are not used to swimming short course meters and the fact that we swam at 7,000 feet above altitude, I am really pleased with the win."
Hoffer knew entering the meet that the altitude could be a factor. "Northern Arizona swims at 7,000 feet everyday, Missouri doesn't," said Hoffer.
The Tigers used the 200 individual medley to open the lead on Northern Arizona. Leslie Hoh led a Missouri 1-2-3 finish, with Megan Morford coming in second place and Sarah Lo in third place.
"I am pleased with the way Leslie (Hoh) has trained the last two weeks," said Hoffer. "She is really coming around."
Freshman Amanda Morford won the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:06.65. Andrea Nigh was the winner in the 50 freestyle and Ellen Cross led a 1-2-3 sweep for Missouri in the 100 freestyle.
The Tigers, who have been training in Tempe, Ariz. since Jan. 3, will train again on Friday before returning home on Saturday. Missouri will look to remain undefeated next week when the Tigers travel to Springfield, Mo. for a Friday evening tilt with Southwest Missouri State and a Saturday afternoon battle with Division II power Drury.
