Clarence Gilbert Leads Team to Championship Game at Portsmouth Invitational

April 6, 2002

Portsmouth, Va. - University of Missouri senior guard Clarence Gilbert made another impressive showing for the second straight game at the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational. Gilbert scored a game-high 23 points Friday and led his M.D. Designs squad to an 80-79 win over Beach Barton Ford. The win puts M.D. Designs (2-0 in the tournament) in the championship game Saturday evening against Portsmouth Sports Club.

Gilbert scored 23 points and hit 7-of-11 shots from beyond the three-point line. His biggest one came with just 39 seconds left in the game, when he drilled a trey with his team trailing by two. That proved to be the game-winner, as Barton Ford was held scoreless the rest of the way.

Fellow Big 12 standout Aaron McGhee of Oklahoma added 13 points and 12 rebounds for M.D. Designs, and Chris Williams of Virginia scored 11 in the winning cause.

M.D. Designs will face Portsmouth Sports Club Saturday night. Portsmouth features Reggie Evans of Iowa, Jason Capel of North Carolina, David Bluthenthal of USC, and Adam Hall of Virginia, among others.
