Columbia, Mo.-The University of Missouri overcame a 2-0 half-time deficit to defeat the Oklahoma State Cowgirls 3-2 in its Big 12 Conference opener. The victory brings Mizzou to 6-1 on the season with a 1-0 league record.
Despite outshooting OSU 26-to-8 in the game, Missouri gave up two goals in the first period to hat tricks. Jolene Schweitzer was able to capitalize twice against MU goalkeeper Stephanie Krawczyk. She scored OSU's first goal unassisted trickling a ball past Krawczyk who just missed the save in a slide. Schweitzer came back to score her second goal on a pass from Courtney Rob. She took a pass from the far left goal post and chipped it over the goalkeepers reach.
Missouri reentered the second half with a frenzy, as the Tigers outshot the Cowgirls 14-to-3 in the period. Midfielder Karen Bauer put Mizzou on the board with a powerhouse shot inside the box. The freshman collected a pass from defender Carrie Crosset and booted it past OSU's Kat Doud. Freshman Shea Swoboda tied up the game just six minutes later heading in a corner kick by Mandy Waters.
Bauer returned as the hero of the match scoring the game-winner with just under five minutes to go. Sophomore forward Melissa McLellan lobbed a pass from the left corner of the box into Bauer who scored on a direct shot from the center.
Megan Duncan took control of the Mizzou net for the remainder of the game. She made two saves and earned her fourth win of the season.
Missouri returns to Big 12 action on Sun., Sept. 30 at 1:00 p.m., when it hosts Oklahoma. The game is scheduled to be played in Audrey J. Walton Soccer Complex.
