COLUMBIA, Mo.- University of Missouri junior shortstop RYAN STEGALL was drafted by the Houston Astros on Tuesday on day one of the 2001 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. The Liberty, Mo. native was chosen with the sixth pick of the seventh round.
Stegall hit .299 this past spring for Missouri with 15 home runs and 46 RBI. He was also a presence on the mound with a 4-0 record and a 3.56 ERA. The right-hander also posted six saves and finished his career with 18 ranking him second all-time.
What Stegall will most be known for is his bat. His 35 home runs is tied for fourth in Missouri school history with former Tiger great and major leaguer Dave Silvestri. Stegall also ranks among Missouri's all-time top 10 leaders in doubles and RBI.
Stegall is the third Missouri player to be drafted by the Houston Astros in the last three years. Pitchers Ryan Jamison and Chris George, both of whom are playing in Houston's Class A organization in Lexington, Ky., were drafted by Houston in the 1999 draft.
