St. Louis, Mo. - University of Missouri men's golfer Mark McBride won two matches Friday to advance to the round of eight in the 2001 Missouri Amateur Championship, being held at Sunset Country Club in St. Louis, Mo.
McBride, the defending champion, defeated Ryan Schultz of Columbia, 4 and 3 in the first match of the day, and came back to down Doug Kreitner of Florissant, 1 up. The two wins put the senior-to-be in Saturday's round of eight. He'll take on Chris Hill of Springfield Saturday morning.
The Lebanon, Mo. native is trying to become the first man to win consecutive Missouri Amateurs since Tom Watson accomplished the feat in 1970 and '71.
In other action at the Missouri Amateur, Missouri Tiger quarterback Kirk Farmer was defeated today in the round of 32 by Steve Shuert of St. Louis, 3 and 2.
