Austin, Texas--The University of Missouri softball team (20-18) had several chances to score runs early, but couldn't capatilize as the Texas Longhorns downed the Tigers 3-1 Saturday in Austin, Texas.
In the bottom of the second inning with one out, the Longhorns scored a run when centerfield Autmn Eastes hit a ground ball single to the shortstop, driving in catcher Marlo Hanks. A base runner would be thrown out on the same play, and a Longhorn stikeout would end the inning.
In the fourth, Texas scored again off of a double to right center field by Tamara Poppe that would score runner Patricia Vega. The Longhorns scored a final run in the fifth off a double to left field that would drive in Trisha Tatro, another pinch runner.
In the top of the sixth with two out, the Tigers would try to get something started as designated player Melanie Fisher notched the first hit for the Tigers with a single to right field. First baseman Erin Erickson would follow up with a single to centerfield, and rightfielder Heather Allister would earn an RBI with a rope single down the left field line, scoring Fisher. However, pitcher Stephanie Falk grounded out to end the inning.
The Tigers held the Longhorns scoreless in the final two innings, but were not able to do anything offensively, taking the 3-1 loss. Falk pitched her 20th complete game, allowing nine hits and three runs 27 batters faced. The Tigers finish their spring trip as they face the Longhorns again on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the second of the two-game series. All the action can be heard on 1580 AM KTGR, or at www.KTGR.com.
