Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri Department of Intercollegiate Athletics released the following statements today concerning news of the tragic death of Columbia Daily Tribune Sports Editor Kent Heitholt.
Director of Athletics Mike Alden
"We're absolutely stunned. It's very hard to put into words the sense of loss that those of us who worked with him feel right now. Kent was someone for whom I had a great deal of respect. You could count on him to be thorough and professional, but he was always very fair. More importantly, he was a good man, and was a pleasure to work with."
Men's Basketball Head Coach Quin Snyder
"We are deeply saddened by the news. Kent was a friend of the program and a respected journalist. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."
Football Head Coach Gary Pinkel
"In my short time here in Columbia, Kent was always a perfect gentleman to me. When I heard the news, it was very saddening for me personally."
Women's Basketball Head Coach Cindy Stein
"Kent was a very dear friend to the University of Missouri and our women's basketball program. It pains me that such a true professional, person and friend was so savagely taken from us especially during this time in which we should be coming together as a nation. Kent made me smile, laugh and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations. On a very personal note, I will truly, truly miss him and his support of our program. From a professional standpoint, we have lost a very talented individual, who was very much an integral part of the Columbia community."
Volleyball Head Coach Susan Kreklow
"This is a tragic loss for the entire community. We've known Kent for a long time and worked pretty closely with him during our time in Columbia. Kent was a good personal friend, a friend of our volleyball program and a true friend and asset to the sports community of mid-Missouri. It's a tremendous loss."
