Columbia, Mo. - The Mizzou softball team (22-19) split with Iowa State (11-17) in a doubleheader Wednesday in Columbia, Mo. MU won the first game 2-1 in eight innings, but fell to the Cyclones 2-0 in the second game.
In the first game, Mizzou scored first in the second inning off a solo homerun over center field by sophomore designated player Melanie Fisher. Three outs would end the inning, and in the top of the third Iowa State answered with a homerun over the left field wall by catcher Mindy Ogan.
Four scoreless innings would follow, but in the bottom of the first extra inning, senior Karen Williams reached base on a single to the shortstop, stole second base, then advanced to third when junior Lindsey Jacoby grounded out to third base. Williams then advanced home when Big 12 Player of the Week Rachael McGinnis drove in the game winning RBI with a single to center field.
Stephanie Falk pitched her 21st complete game for the Tigers, allowing seven hits and striking out eight in 32 batters faced.
In the nightcap, both teams went scoreless until the fourth inning, when ISU rightfielder Laura Browning would score on a wild pitch.
The Tigers could not answer the run, and in the seventh Iowa State pinch runner Ashley Core would score on a fielder's choice play. Tiger sophomore Ingrid Werner pitched six innings, giving up just three hits and one run in 22 batters faced. Falk relieved Werner in the seventh, allowing one hit and one run in 5 at bats.
