Tigers Split Again in Red Desert Classic

March 3, 2001

St. George, Utah - Mizzou (7-12) ended on a good note Saturday, defeating California-Santa Barbara 3-1 in their second game of the day. In the first game, however, the Tigers gave up three unearned runs to fall to Washington.

The games, initially slated to begin at noon and 2 p.m., were backed up to 2 and 4 p.m. due to a quarter inch of rain that fell Friday night.

Against Washington, Mizzou scored early in the first when sophomore Melanie Fisher singled to second base, driving in Karen Williams. The Huskies would then score two off an error by the shortstop in the fourth and another in the fifth off a wild pitch. Freshman Ricki Walker tried to start a rally for Missouri in the sixth with a solo shot over the centerfield fence, but the Tigers could not capitalize on the play and lost the game 3-2. Sophomore pitcher Ingrid Werner pitched an excellent game, striking out five and allowing just two hits in seven innings of work.

Mizzou then faced California-Santa Barbara, neither team scoring until the fifth inning when Gaucho Teresa Tolson hit a double to left-centerfield that drove in a run. The Tigers answered in the sixth with three runs, including another RBI by Fisher off a double to left-center. The Tigers held the Gauchos scoreless in the seventh to win the game 3-1. Junior catcher Mary McGrane stepped up to lead the Tigers' defense, catching a total of four Gaucho runners attempting to steal. Two of the four were back to back plays at third base for the last two outs of the game.

The Tigers play their final game of the tournament Sunday as they face No. 7 Stanford at 11 a.m.
