MEXICO, Mo. - The Missouri Tigers broke in the new practice fields at Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Mo. under overcast skies on Monday morning. For the first time since two-a-day camp began last Thursday, the Tigers were in full pads and able to hit and tackle.
The morning practice included a quick period of live goal line drills, some seven-on-seven passing drills and the first live team scrimmage. It was also the first practice that saw the first team offense up against the first team defense.
Overall, LARRY SMITH was pleased with the intensity and the amount of work that the team was able to get done. Smith pointed out that the Tigers are a little rusty in the hitting and tackling area, but it was just the first day.
STANDOUT PLAYS: Junior inside linebacker JAMONTE ROBINSON laid a big hit on tailback ZACK ABRON on consecutive plays in goal line drills ... junior MICHAEL GAVINS also contributed some big run stops during goal line work ... junior tailback ZAIN GILMORE provided the offensive play of the day scampering 25 yards down field after breaking three tackles. The first person to greet Gilmore down field was co-Offensive Coordinator BILL CUBIT who sprinted down the sidelines to congratulate Zain ... senior halfback JULIAN JONES picked off a pass in seven-on-seven drills. Jones has intercepted a pass in each of the first four days of practice so far.
IN ATTENDANCE: An estimated 75 fans and 18 members of the media attended the first morning practice. Also in attendance was GARY LINK, former MU basketball player and now color commentator on the Tiger Network for men's and women's basketball.
