Vienna, Austria - The Big 12 Men's Basketball All-Stars scored a big win over the Basket Club of Vienna on Thursday, Aug. 10, besting B.C., 95-57.
A standing-room-only crowd gathered to watch as the All-Stars began to pull away after eight minutes of play never looked back. Iowa State's Jamaal Tinsley connected with Baylor's Terry Black on a pair of half-court alley-oops that brought the crowd to its feet as the Americans put on a show for the Austrian crowd. Texas A&M's Bernard King found Black on an off-the-backboard pass late in the game that served as the proverbial icing on the cake.
Luke Axtell of Kansas led the way in the scoring column, connecting on three of five three-pointers en route to a game-high 19. Axtell, playing in his first game in several months, showed no effects of the time off and had a dynamite first half on six-of-eight shooting.
"It felt great to be out there," Axtell said after the game. "A game like this in a setting like this really bolsters your confidence. Coach Patton has really given us a lot of freedom."
Also having a stellar showing was Texas Tech's Cliff Owens. After going 0-for-1 in the opening stanza, Owens was on fire in the second half, going five-of-seven on his way to 11 points.
Asked about the differences in international play, Owens replied, "We made a few adjustments, but it wasn't that different. This game is universal."
The team returns to play on Saturday, August 12, when it faces Arcadia Traiskirchen B.C. at 7 p.m. local time.
