Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri men's golf team handed out its team awards for the recently-completed 1999-2000 season.
Senior DAVID SUGGS was named the team's Most Valuable Player. Suggs led Missouri for the second straight season in scoring, with a team-best 74.29 stroke average. His average was a career-best for the Chesterfield, Mo. native, and was the best single-season mark since Bret Burroughs averaged 73.8 in 1984-85. He did so despite playing the last half of the spring season with injured ribs, suffered in prior to a tournament in March.
The team's Newcomer-of-the-Year award went to freshman SHAWN FLEMING. Fleming, a native of Village of Golf, Fla., played in nine tournaments during the season, and averaged 78.00 strokes per round - best among Tiger rookies.
Senior ANDY ESPE was honored as the recipient of the first-annual Dr. Robert Gaines Award for Academic Achievement. Espe, a Kirksville, Mo. native averaged 79.13 strokes per round during his Tiger career.
"I can't think of anyone more deserving of the award than Andy," said Head Coach Tim Robyn. "He's shown excellence in the classroom as well as showing a zeal for being involved in community service. He's a pleasure to be around and is a wonderful representative of the program, and is the perfect recipient for this honor.
The final honoree was senior DOYLE MOFFITT, who was given the Rich Poe Award, which is given to the player who best represents commitment and service to the golf team, the University and the community both on and off the course. The award is named after the former standout golfer and longtime coach of the Tigers, Rich Poe, who retired from coaching in 1998.
