Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's golf team received a bid today to compete in the 24-team NCAA West Regional, which will be held May 11-13 at the Karsten Golf Course, in Tempe, Ariz. A minimum of 11 teams and three individuals will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 24-27 in Sunriver, Ore. It marks the third straight season that Missouri has received an at-large team bid for regional competition.
"We're very pleased that we have a chance to compete again," said second-year Head Coach Tom Loyd, who has guided the Tigers to regional berths in each of his two years at the helm. "We expected to be selected, but it's always nice to get the call that you're in," he said.
Missouri is coming off a solid showing at the Big 12 Championships, where the Tigers tied for fourth place along with 15th-ranked Texas, just five strokes shy of champion Oklahoma.
Loyd's squad received the regional bid despite losing arguably two of the top players in MU history -- Stefanie Mitchell and Letitia Moses -- to graduation after last season. "I think this says a lot about how serious the girls have been this year about competing. Each one of them has worked harder this season than I've ever seen, and that's a credit to their desire to build on what they've accomplished in the past," Loyd said.
Missouri is led individually by junior Amelia Moses, who recently won the Big 12 individual championship in Lubbock, Texas. Moses became the first-ever conference champion in MU women's golf history.
Other Tigers set to compete in the regional include sophomore Nisha Sadekar, junior Jamie Tucker, senior Tobi Probst and freshman Elin Ohlsson.
Prior to the current streak, Mizzou had never qualified for a regional on a team basis. MU finished 15th in the West Regional in 1998 and 16th in 1999 and did not advance to the finals.
