Hutchinson, Kan. - The University of Missouri men's golf team finished in ninth place at the Big 12 Championships, which wrapped up today with 18 holes of play at Prairie Dunes Golf & Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
The Tigers improved on their 1999 finish of 12th, and the 897 team total was the best MU has shot in the four-year history of the Big 12 Championships, bettering the previous school best total by 31 strokes (928 in 1999).
The Tigers moved up one spot in the standings in today's final round, as they posted a team score of 305, and ended with a three-round score of 897. Oklahoma State claimed the team title in a rout over defending champion Kansas, winning with a total of 851. Kansas was a distant second, at 863.
Sophomore Cory Ewert was MU's top individual finisher, as he shot a three-round total of 223 to finish alone in 25th place. He shot rounds of 75, 72 and 76 to improve by 19 strokes over his performance at last year's Big 12 Championships, when he shot a 242 total and placed 58th.
Sophomore Mark McBride tied for 30th overall with a three-round total of 226, after shooting rounds of 75, 75 and 76. McBride improved by 10 strokes on his 1999 performance, when he shot 236 and tied for 52nd as a freshman.
Junior Tom Vogt closed out his best season as a Tiger, as he tied for 32nd overall with a three-round total of 227. Vogt set a career best when he fired a two-over-par 72 to open the tournament, and closed with rounds of 76 and 79. The St. Charles, Mo. native averaged 76.63 strokes per round this season, which was more than four full strokes better than his career average of 80.73 entering the 1999-2000 season.
Senior David Suggs closed out his stellar Tiger career as he tied for 36th place overall, with a total of 228. Suggs had hopes of a strong showing and a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Central Regional (where he tied for 5th last year), but an opening-round 82 dashed those hopes. He was only six over par in his final two rounds (72 and 74).
Sophomore Neal Stafford rounded out the Tiger contingent with a 232 three-round total, which tied him for 46th overall. He tied for 50th in 1999 with a 234 total.
Missouri's season likely will come to an end with the Big 12 tournament, as a bid to the NCAA Central Regional (set for May 18-20 in Victoria, Texas) is not expected. Bids will be handed out May 9th.
