Head coach Blake Starkey's lineup change had little effect on Missouri's match against the Baylor Bears today. The Tigers lost their second conference match of the season 9-0.
The final four spots on the Missouri lineup played out well for the Tigers. Freshman Kristina Olshanskaya played a tough singles match at No. 3. After losing the first set 6-1, Olshanskaya came back in the second, tying it 5-5. Unfortunately, the Bears Vida Mulec finished off the set with a 7-5 win.
The No. 4 match proved to be a battle as well. Missouri sophomore Caitlin Thompson started the second set up 3-0. Baylor's Frida Borjesson fought back to bring the score within one (5-4) and continued winning, ending the set in a 7-5 decision.
Sophomore Julie Thomas started up 3-2 in her second set at No. 6 following a 6-3 loss in the first set. After tying the set at three a-piece, the Bears Paola Stephen went up 5-4. Thomas refused to back down, winning two more sets, making the score 6-5. Stephen took the set, however, 7-5.
"It was a heck of a challenge," Starkey said. "I was very pleased with a couple of the matches. Julie Thomas couldn't have played better. Kristina finished up great after a slow start. So did Joni Jordan. In order to be a really good team, we've got to play very good opponents. The Big 12 Conference is just that."
The Tigers face Southwest Missouri State tomorrow at Club Woodrail in Columbia.
