Columbia, Mo.--The University of Missouri women's soccer team sends another assistant coach into an NCAA Division I head coaching position, MU assistant Jennifer Haigh has been named the new head women's soccer coach at Northwestern University.
Like an earlier predecessor, Leslie Kerhin, who served as an assistant for one season before taking a Division I head coaching job at Towson University, Haigh's experience at Missouri has helped her advance to the next level.
Haigh inherits a four-year program that finished the 2000 season with a 3-12-2 record and a 2-7-1 mark in the Big Ten Conference. "I am very pleased to announce Jennifer Haigh as our new head women's soccer coach," Northwestern Athletic Director Rick Taylor said. "She has proven to be an outstanding recruiter at two other major programs and we expect her to continue to build Wildcat women's soccer into a Big ten and national power," he added. Last season, Haigh helped the Tigers to a 10-10 season record and a fifth-place finish in the Big 12 Conference. In just one season as MU's first assistant, she brought in the best freshman recruiting class in Tiger history and helped prep a young team for the rigors of Division I play.
Prior to her Missouri appointment, Haigh served as a three-year assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Arizona State. At ASU, Haigh distinguished herself as one of collegiate soccer's finest recruiters. Many NCAA soccer insiders have listed the 2000 ASU recruiting class among the best nationwide and both the 1999 and 1998 recruiting classes received regional ranking. Soccer Buzz also ranked the 1998 ASU class at No. 22 in the nation.
"Jenny has tremendous drive and ambition that will serve her well as the head coach at Northwestern," MU Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. "She will help take Northwestern to a new level. We're sad, but what a great opportunity for her. I really look forward to see her rise. I anticipate great things from her."
