Manhattan, Kan. - University of Missouri junior Mark McBride (Lebanon, Mo.) shot an even-par 72 today to win the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, which wrapped up Tuesday afternoon at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan. McBride overcame a one-stroke deficit entering today's final round, and sealed the win when he birdied the 18th hole after sticking his approach shot on the par-four hole to within six feet. McBride, the reigning Missouri State Amateur Champion, birdied two of his final three holes to claim a one-shot win over Dave Klaas of Illinois State.
"It feels great to get off the schneid and get my first win," said McBride, who notched his first collegiate victory after several top-10 finishes in his previous two seasons. "I felt really calm out there today, and I just wanted to play smart and hit the shots that I can hit. I kept the ball in play and made pars," he said.
McBride said his experience this past summer of battling for the state amateur championship helped his cause today. "Winning this summer helped my confidence," he said. "I know what it takes to win a tournament now, and I know that I have the talent to win if I'm playing my best. That definitely helped this week," he said.
The Tiger team slipped one notch from second into third after today's final round. Tim Robyn's squad shot a final-round team score of 311, and ended with a team total of 917, 23 shots behind team champ Illinois State (1st -- 894) and host Kansas State (2nd - 913).
Freshman Michael Radek (Chicago, Ill.) finished in a tie for 13th place individually, as he shot rounds of 77-73-80 for a total of 230. He was just one shot out of a top-10 finish.
Next up for Mizzou was freshman Brandon Knaub (Seven Valleys, Pa.), who finished 25th with a three-round 234. Senior Tom Vogt (St. Charles, Mo.) and freshman Ben Douglas (Brisbane, Australia) each tied for 42nd place with identical totals of 244. Junior Chris Happ (Winetka, Ill.) competed unattached, and tied for 28th place with a total of 236.
Next up for MU is the Purina Classic, which is one of the nation's premier fall events hosted by Missouri. Dates for that competition are set for Oct. 9-10 at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Course in St. Charles, Mo.
