COLUMBIA, MO. __ - University of Missouri Director of Athletics Michael Alden, Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim Ritter, Tiger basketball player Kareem Rush, and MU Life Skills Coordinator Ed Stewart will be on hand, Tues., Feb. 1, at Lange Middle School to kickoff "The Pursuit of Excellence."
A 30-minute program will be held at 9 a.m. in the school gymnasium to announce that Mizzou student-athletes will be partnering with Lange sixth graders through an electronic mentoring program. The "pen-pal" program will enable Tiger student-athletes to communicate regularly with middle school students to encourage them to pursue excellence in their endeavors.
"Student-athletes are viewed as role models," Stewart said, "and possess the ability to encourage and inspire students of all ages. Electronic mentoring allows a convenient and expedient way for student-athletes to impact and encourage young people both far and near while simultaneously challenging themselves to excel at higher levels academically, personally and athletically."
