QUIN SNYDER PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES Thursday, January 20, 2000
On the MU/KU rivalry: "I think I have a pretty good idea of what is going on. It's not hard to figure out. I've watched the game before. It's like any great rivalry because of the common denominators."
On understanding the rivalry: "It goes to the magnitude of the game: you can't possibly understand it until you've been through it. It's like saying you can't possibly understand what it's like to be a head coach until you've done that. If I've been here 10 years and we're playing (KU) for the 20th time, I will have a better feel for it. Experience is no question a great teacher."
On rivalries playing on a team's emotions: "Emotion can be good and bad. We have to be focused on what we need to do to be successful. Hatred is not a real productive motive for success. Sometimes it can motivate you, but I don't really subscribe to that, personally. You need to play with poise and not get out of character. That is something to be aware of because (the opposite) could happen."
On playing at the Hearnes Center: "This place is a tough place to play. That's been proven over the years, with or without me."
On the Duke/North Carolina rivalry compared to the MU/KU rivalry: "The similarities are the proximity of the schools and the proximity in which the fans of the schools live. So there is a lot of interaction on a regular basis. That makes for a lot of fun and some good digs. Both programs have been very good as well, so that has contributed to the rivalry. A big rivalry usually jumps up the level of play."
On Kansas' talent: "I'm not as concerned about what everybody else (in the conference) is doing. There are people knocking people off. Hopefully we can play well. (Kansas') individual talent is terrific. They play well together. They come at you with a lot of different looks, pressure-wise. They do lots of different things." On guarding the post, namely Kansas' Eric Chenowith: "We won't do anything incredibly different from what we normally do. The post is kind of a common problem for us (preparing for other opponents). We have to be able to guard the post without fouling."
On Junior Center Tajudeen Soyoye: "We need him to be in the game. When he's in the game, he has the opportunity to do some of the things that we have talked about, whether it be guarding the post or rebounding offensively. He's a big part of what we do."
On Sophomore Guards Keyon Dooling and Clarence Gilbert: "Clarence has become one of the best spot-up shooters around. Their body types are totally different which dictates (some of what they do differently). Keyon is cut real high and is long. Clarence is built lower to the ground and has great strength. They are both tough in their own way. They are both outgoing and both help lead us. I have been encouraging them both to drive a lot and they both drive differently. Clarence is more of a power driver while Keyon changes speeds. Clarence is playing more off of Keyon then Keyon is playing off of Clarence. And that's okay."
