Columbia, Mo.-Despite battling a heat index of 110 degrees, the University of Missouri and Wake Forest women's soccer teams take home wins after the first round of competition in the Ellis Copy Tiger Invitational today. The Demon Deacons played to a 2-1 victory over Ohio State, winning the match with a goal in sudden death overtime. The Tigers trampled Florida State 2-1 giving up the shutout with only a minute on the clock to a hat trick.
In the Wake Forest-Ohio State game, the Buckeyes played strong leading 1-0 over the No. 12 ranked Deacons going into the half. OSU scoring leader Lindsay Eckles posted the first goal of the game early when she collected a pass from Emily Thorpe for the sting. Wake Forest throttled the Ohio State defense during the second half taking 10 shots, but the Buckeyes d-squad kept them to just three shots on goal. The Deacons were able to come back and tie the score however, when Stacy Roeck sent a low cross to Joline Charlton for a goal. Wake Forest sewed up the game in overtime. Roeck dished out another cross that was tipped by Colleen Bradley. Sarah Noftsinger then delivered the ball into the net.
Wake Forest outshot Ohio State 19-9 in the contest. The Buckeyes proved a worthy opponent however as eight of nine strikes were on goal. Three yellow cards were issued in the game, two to Wake Forest and one to Ohio State.
The win brings Wake Forest to a 3-0 season record and drops Ohio State to1-2.
In the Missouri-Florida State game, the Tigers and the Seminoles battled through a scoreless first half. Mizzou dominated the offensive efforts taking nine shots, including five on goal, while leaving Florida State to just three shots in the first 45 minutes. The Tigers reentered the second half with a fire, scoring their first goal in the 48th minute when freshman Adriene Davis lobbed a pass to Mizzou scoring leader Nikki Thole for the score. The goal is Thole's second of the season and her 53rd career.
The forward also lent an assist to Mizzou's second goal, senior Kristin Boeker received a pass from Thole for a direct slam into the net. The goal culminated Boeker's efforts as she led the team with four shots on goal in the game.
Despite taking 12 shots in the second half, the Seminoles were kept to only one goal by the talented Missouri defense. Florida State scored with less than a minute to go in the game when Cindy Schofield lobbed a ball high over the box. Missouri keeper Graham Watson pulled out to catch the ball but was unable to make the save before 5-foot-9 Norwegian centerfielder Maren Vik Edvarsen slammed a header into the empty net.
Overall, the Tigers dominated the contest outshooting the Seminoles 22-15. Watson earns the win for Missouri making six saves. The game also proved rather physical resulting in 27 fouls between the two teams and two Missouri yellow cards.
The win boosts Mizzou and takes Florida State to a 2-1 record.
Action in the Ellis Copy Tiger Invitational continues on Sun., Sept. 3 when Ohio State and Florida State face-off at 10:00 a.m. Missouri and Wake Forest follow in a game starting at 1:00 p.m. Tickets for the contest can be purchased at the gate or by calling 1-800-CAT-PAWS.
