MU Swimmers Within 20 Points of Kansas

March 3, 2000

COLUMBIA, Mo -The Missouri men's swimming and diving team has 202 points following day two of the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. The Tigers are in sixth place and trail the fifth place Kansas Jayhawks (222) by 20 points.

Freshman Matt Ferrarelli was the Missouri star performer for the second straight day. After finishing in sixth place in last night's 200 individual medley, the England native placed fourth in the 400 individual medley. His time was three minutes, 54.22 seconds, just slower than the mark he posted in the morning prelims to break the MU school record. His time of 3:53.80 this morning is an NCAA consideration cut time.

Also swimming in Friday night's finals was junior Aaron Lo in the 100 breaststroke. Lo placed seventh with a time of 56.31 seconds.

The other highlight of the night for the Tigers was junior Mike Cervenka in the 200 freestyle. After a disappointing preliminary race in the morning, Cervenka posted a time of 1 minute, 38.77 seconds to place 11th overall and third in the consolation race. His time is the second fastest in school history, and is both a NCAA consideration cut time as well as a U.S. Olympic Trial time.

Freshman Radu Miclaus finished in 12th place in both the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly events. Miclaus' recorded a time of 49.58 seconds in the 100 butterfly, the fifth fastest clip in Tiger history.

Senior Randy Swift and junior James Herrick finished 14th and 16th overall in the 400 individual medley for Mizzou. Shane Whildin and Brendan Smith did the same respectively in the 100 butterfly. Whildin turned in the schools fourth fastest time in that event in the morning prelims.

Dan Knudson and Charlie Davies both posted points for the Tigers in the 100 breaststroke and Andy Cole placed 15th overall in the 100 backstroke.

On the diving board, freshman James Sweeney placed 11th overall on the three-meter board with a score of 388.30. That score qualifies Sweeney for the NCAA Zone Meet.
