Track and Field Shines At Meyo Invitational

Feb. 6, 2000

The University of Missouri men's and women's track and field teams had a successful weekend at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The event was hosted by the University of Notre Dame with events taking place both Friday and Saturday evenings.

There were several outstanding performances turned in by the Tigers including five NCAA provisional qualifying standards and a new school record. Mizzou won six events over the two days of competition including two 1-2-3 sweeps in both of the men's throwing events.

Thrower Micah Shanks continued his outstanding junior campaign as he won the 35 lb. weight throw with a toss of 62 feet, 3 ? inches. With that throw, Shanks broke his school record in the event for the third consecutive meet.

Freshmen Russ Bell and Christian Cantwell were not to be overshadowed as they finished in second and third places respectively. Both men threw over 60 for the first times in their young Tiger careers.

In the shot put, Cantwell turned in his best performance of the season winning the event with a throw of 56 feet, 10 ? inches. It was the freshman's second win of the season. Bell placed second with a season-best effort of 54-10 ? while Shanks finished third with a heave of 53-5.

In the running events, there were four MU athletes who ran to NCAA provisional qualifying standards. Leading the pack were two fist time qualifiers. Freshman Kerry Hils won the mile run by less than second over Michigan junior Lisa Ouellet. Hils time of 4:49.16 was good enough to provisionally qualify for the national championships in only the third mile of her career.

Junior Sunny Gilbert also turned in a spectacular performance in the 800m run finishing in second place. Her time of 2:08.58 was less than a tenth of a second behind winner Hope Sanders of Notre Dame. Gilbert along with fellow junior Ashley Wysong both ran to provisional standards. It was Wysong's first race of the season and Gilbert's first qualifying mark of her career.

The other Mizzou athlete to run a provisional standard was defending 800m champion Derrick Peterson. The junior won the 800m in 1minute,:48.26. It marked the first time he has broken the 1:50 mark this season.

Missouri's women's distance medley relay team set the tone for the meet on Friday night winning the event in both a NCAA provisional mark as well as establishing a new Meyo Invitational Record.

The Black and Gold will take to the road again next weekend as they travel to Ames, Iowa to compete in the Iowa State Classic. Not only is the Classic a meet filled with tough competition, it is also where the Big 12 Championships will be held later this month.
