COLUMBIA, Mo.- University of Missouri pitcher Logan Dale is close to breaking a record in Wareham, Mass. The junior right-hander is playing for the Wareham Gatemen this summer in the prestigious Cape Cod League, known to be the top summer league for amateur baseball players in the country.
In three starting assignments, Dale has hurled 25 innings without allowing a run. If Dale can throw four more consecutive innings without allowing a run, he will break the Cape Cod League record held by current Detroit Tigers rookie Jeff Weaver in 1997. Dale's next starting assignment is scheduled for Saturday night (7:00 p.m. est.) when the Gatemen host the Hyannis Mets in Wareham.
To date, Dale is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 25 innings. He has scattered 12 hits while striking out 17 and walking just two hitters. In his first outing, Dale pitched seven scoreless innings in a no-decision. In his second start, Dale hurled a 3-0 complete-game shutout and threw just 109 pitches. In his last outing, Dale pitched a 9-0 complete-game shutout and tossed just 107 pitches.
Several current and former Major League players have played for the Wareham Gatemen including Walt Weiss (Atlanta Braves), Chuck Knoblauch (New York Yankees), Doug Glanville (Philadelphia Phillies) and Brian Anderson (Arizona). Former big leaguers include Pete Incaviglia and Bob Tewksbury.
Dale was the Tigers No. 4 starting pitcher this past season. He recorded a 7-2 record in 16 appearances and had an ERA of 5.45. Dale pitched 77 2/3 innings this past year striking out 72 while walking 22. He is considered one of the Tigers top returning pitchers for the 2000 season.
