Eugene, Ore. - Missouri's 800m tandem of two-time National Champion Derrick Peterson and two-time all-American Ashley Wysong were unable to advance to the second round of their respective 800m races at the United States of America Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Peterson, who won on nearly every track he set foot on in 1999, came up one spot short of qualifying as he posted a 1:49.72 time. Sixteen runners qualified for the second round, Peterson's time ranked 17th overall. The field was extremely competitive, as it featured three former USATF 800m champions and two former Olympians.
Wysong, who it must be noted has accomplished all her success in just her first outdoor season, ran a 2:09.81 race, out of contention for qualification into the second round.
Two more Tigers are still waiting for their chance to compete at Eugene. Three-time all-American javelin thrower Darin File and 1998 NCAA steeplechase qualifier Ryan Pirtle will both lineup for competition on Sunday. It is Pirtle's first USATF appearance, File finished sixth at the USATF meet in 1998.
