COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mixed emotions characterized Missouri's game with conference rival Nebraska. As Missouri said a bittersweet farewell to seniors, Jamie Lowry, Kim Slover, Shayna Snarr and Ashley Woodall, tears flowed. But elation reigned as the Tigers (37-17), behind two shutouts from Stephanie Falk, swept the Huskers (27-18) in a low-scoring double header at University Field.
In the first game, both teams played tremendous defense to keep each other scoreless down to the wire. The Tigers turned two double plays. In the bottom of the second inning, Nebraska's Heather Martin grounded into a double play. Tiger shortstop Shawna Robinson tagged the runner at second and threw Martin out at first. In the top of the fifth, Martin hit a line drive to Robinson who threw out Leigh Suhr at first.
Neither team got a hit until the fourth inning when Tiger senior Kim Slover drove a double into center field. Nebraska had one hit in the fifth and one in the sixth. Cindy Rothemeyer hit a double to left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Kelli Pinkepank reached on a fielder's choice when Robinson threw Rothemeyer out at home. Nebraska got one more hit in the seventh but was unable to score.
Husker's pitcher Jenny Voss walked the first two Tiger batters in the bottom of the seventh. Linda Swarts sacrificed advancing Slover and Wendy Harrison to second and third. Jamie Lowry grounded to short, and Harrison beat the throw home to score, ending the game, 1-0.
Missouri got off to a quicker start in the second game. In the third, Harrison singled to left center and advanced on the throw. She advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Linda Swarts sacrifice fly to center.
The Tigers' Stephanie Falk held the lead for the Tigers. Falk struck out five batters in the final four innings, to give her eight strikeouts for the games and twelve on the day.
Nebraska mounted a final effort in the top of the seventh. With two out, Ellen Middleton and Jenifer Williams singled to give the Huskers some momentum, but it dwindled quickly as two Tiger seniors made the final play of the day. Jamie Fuente grounded to third baseman Shayna Snarr who threw to Kim Slover at first.
