OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Baylor righthander Jason Jennings of Mesquite, Texas, fired his second one-hitter of the year as the Bears downed Missouri 2-0 in Game Three of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference baseball tournament at Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark Wednesday.
Jennings, who pitched a one-hitter against Northeast Louisiana on Feb. 10, surrendered a leadoff single to Tigers' leftfielder W.T. Hoover in the first inning before shutting down Missouri with 10 strikeouts and two walks the rest of the way.
The BU junior raised his record to 12-1 for the most wins in the Big 12 in '99 and helped Baylor set a school record with its 44th victory of the season. The Bears are now 44-12 as they advance to a 8 p.m. Thursday battle with the winner of Wednesday night's Texas-Texas Tech game winner.
The Bears scored all the runs they needed off hard-luck losing pitcher, Justin Stine (9-4), in the second inning. Mark Cogdill singled in a run and third baseman Preston Underdown produced a sacrifice fly to give Baylor the necessary tallies.
Missouri, which fell to 35-18 overall, allowed Baylor only five hits -- two by rightfielder Anthony Hensley -- as Stine struck out three and walked two in working the full eight innings for the Tigers. Missouri meets the loser of the Texas-Texas Tech game at 1 p.m. (CDT) Thursday. Jennings added a double to his pitching effort as Baylor committed just one error behind him.
The back-to-back shutouts in Wednesday's matches represented the first consecutive shutouts in 24 seasons of conference tournaments (Big Eight and Big 12) in Oklahoma City. The old Southwest Conference had back-to-back blank jobs in its 1986 tournament at College Station, Texas.
