TIGERS OPEN DUAL SEASON WITH IOWA STATE
No more exhibitions, this one's real. The Missouri Tigers swimming and diving teams will take to the pool this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against Big 12 foe Iowa State at the University Natatorium in Columbia. The Tigers have been through two intrasquad meets so far and swam at the Big 12 Invite last weekend in Lincoln, Neb.
The Missouri women have enjoyed plenty of success during Head Coach Brian Hoffer's era against the Cyclones where as the MU men have not. The women have won all but one dual meet against Iowa State (1994-95) while the men have yet to defeat ISU in dual competition during Hoffer's tenure. The Iowa State men's squad enters the meet ranked No. 24 in the country.
LAST YEAR vs. THE CYCLONES
The Missouri Tigers and Iowa State Cyclones opened up last year's dual season against one another in Ames, Ia. The MU women defeated ISU 155-88 while the nationally-ranked Cyclone men wracked up a 147-90 win over the Tigers.
On the women's side, Cristina Souza paced the Tigers with victories in both the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle. Kim Lambert and Kara Bramer each collected their first collegiate victories with wins in the 50 free and 200 free respectively. Returning Tigers Bethany Biaett (200 IM.) and Rikki Janes (200 back) also picked up wins for Mizzou.
Iowa State's Peder Skoog was a double-winner on the men's side in the 200 free and 200 backstroke. Distance swimmer Evan Deszoeke also took home two wins in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle events.
The Tigers claimed two victories on the day. Ryan Ruddy was victorious in the 200 breaststroke while Brad Duggan won the 3-meter diving competition.
THE LAST TIME OUT
The Tigers and Cyclones got a good look at one another this past weekend in Lincoln, Neb. at the Big 12 Invite. Both teams received some impressive performances.
The MU women were led by junior Tawney Larm. The school record-holder in three different events placed in the top six in four different races last weekend with 5th place finishes in the 200 and 400 individual medley and 6th place honors in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Sophomore Kara Bramer put on a good showing in the individual medley events as well. She placed third ahead of Larm, the school record-holder, in the 200 IM. and finished 7th in the 400 IM. Juniors Rikki Janes and Cristina Souza were both top 10 finishers in two different events and sophomore Kim Lambert placed 7th in the 50 free.
Not to be outshined by any means was the performance of freshman Molly Vetter. Vetter chalked up a fifth place finish in the 500 freestyle in her first collegiate meet and placed 9th in the 200 free.
Another freshman, Erin Wilke, had a strong showing on the 3-meter diving board as she finished in sixth place. Not bad considering the five finishers in front of her were all NCAA qualifiers a year ago.
On the men's side, senior backstroke specialist Chris Peters let the competition know that he is ready to battle for top honors in the Big 12 Conference as he placed third in the 100 backstroke (ahead of ISU's Peder Skoog) and fourth in the 200 back. Skoog took home the win the 200.
Senior Mike Miller put together two top 10 finishes in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Freshmen Shane Whildin and Andy Cole both had strong collegiate debuts. Whildin placed 8th and 11th respectively in 100 and 200 butterfly while Cole placed 8th in both backstroke events.
