COLUMBIA, Mo.- Frustration set in early and often for the Missouri Tigers on Wednesday night at the Hearnes Center. The Kansas State Wildcats (8-4, 1-1), winners of six of their last seven games, took down the Tigers (7-5, 0-2) in Columbia by a score of 72-60. The Wildcats won it without the full-time services of two of their regular starters.
Kansas State played without starting guard Kim Woodlee (9.5 ppg., 3.9 assists pg.) and received just 13 minutes out of their second leading scorer Angie Finkes, both battling the flu bug. Instead it was 6-6 junior Olga Firsova and back-up guard Kristin Rethman, both making their second starts of the season, who burned the Tigers. Firsova scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds while Rethman hit for 12 points including a pair of three-pointers. Nicky Ramage led the way for K-State with 19 points while point guard Essence Perry played all 40 minutes and recorded 10 points and 11 assists.
K-State led the Tigers 29-28 at halftime. Missouri took their first lead of game since 2-0 with 18:45 to go to take a 30-29 lead. After a couple of lead changes, Kansas State took the game over. The Wildcats went on a 9-0 run to make it 42-34. A Ramage offensive put-back gave K-State their biggest lead at 48-38 with 12:50 to play in the game. The Wildcats out-rebounded the Tigers 45-37 and pulled down 17 offensive boards. Still leading by 10 points, back-to-back turnovers by Mizzou's Amy Monsees led to back-to-back lay-ups by Perry to give K-State a 66-51 advantage.
Kansas State shot just 38 percent from the floor, but took 13 more shots than Missouri. Nothing seemed to fall all night for the Tigers, who came into the game shooting at a 48 percent clip. Missouri shot just 41 percent and leading scorers Julie Helm and Amy Monsees went a combined 7-for-26 from the floor. Kesha Bonds paced the Tigers with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Monsees finished with 13 points. Helm was held to just 10 points, her lowest scoring total of the season.
The Tigers are back in action this Saturday night when they host Texas A&M at 7:00 p.m. at the Hearnes Center.
