One of the greatest running backs in Missouri history, Wilder went on to a distinguished professional career in the NFL. In three years at MU, Wilder set the school rushing record with 2,357 yards. His production was hampered in 1979 by a lingering hamstring injury or his totals could have been much higher. But it’s the 1978 Nebraska game for which he is probably best remembered. In that game, he carried 28 times for 181 yards and four touchdowns including the game-winner in a 35-31 MU victory. He led Missouri in rushing three times and was the MVP of the 1978 Liberty Bowl game that Missouri won over LSU. He was drafted in the second round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and spent nine seasons there. He ranks first in Buccaneer history in rushing yards (6,008), rushing attempts (1,586) and receptions (431, since broken by Mike Evans). He scored 47 touchdowns. He set NFL records with 43 carries in a game in 1984 (since broken), 407 carries in the season (since broken) and touches (492) in a single season. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 1984, and a second-team all-Pro. He wrapped up his pro career playing with the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions in 1990. A native of Sikeston, Missouri, hence his nickname – "The Sikeston Train."
