Ed Lampitt was little-known to many as a wrestler at Mizzou but is one of the most inspirational figures ever to come out of Tigerland. He came to MU from St. Charles, Missouri, after two undefeated high school wrestling seasons, then went on to become the first Missouri wrestler to place at the Big Eight Conference tournament in 1966. He was also the second, two years later. Lampitt captained an undefeated team at Mizzou in 1968 and set school records for wins by a sophomore and in a career. He graduated with honors in civil engineering, then went on to become a dentist. Later, he suffered a debilitating brain tumor. Two surgeries rendered him unable to speak and totally paralyzed. Through rehabilitation, though told he would live a vegetative existence, he recovered but remained paralyzed on one side of his body. He returned to private practice after learning to perform his duties with one hand. He also became a private pilot, took up golf and snow skiing, and not surprisingly became a dynamic motivational speaker. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
