COLUMBIA, Mo. – Four Mizzou wrestlers – redshirt junior John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.), redshirt sophomore Connor Flynn (Dardenne Prairie, Mo.), redshirt freshman 184-pounder Canten Marriott (Excelsior Springs, Mo.) and redshirt senior 197-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa) – were named the to the Academic All-MAC team, announced by the league Monday. The honor is the third for Miklus, second for Erneste and first for Flynn and Marriott.
To qualify for the award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of contests. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible of the award.
Erneste, who maintains a 3.686 GPA while pursuing his Master's in Business, produced a record of 25-4 this season while winning his second conference title and qualifying for his second NCAA Championships appearance. Erneste defeated nine ranked wrestlers on the season, recorded bonus points in 12 of his 25 wins, and ranked third on the team in falls with nine. Erneste graduated with a degree in Mathematics in December 2017.
Flynn, a 3.20 GPA in Business Administration, went 25-9 in his first season in the starting lineup for Mizzou. Flynn captured the MAC title at 165 pounds for the Tigers, and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career. Flynn's five technical falls ranked third on the team this season.
Marriott, a Business Administration major with a 3.523 GPA, posted a record of 26-8 in his debut season as an attached wrestler for the Tigers. Marriott won 10 matches by bonus points on the season, and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career.
Miklus, who is currently pursuing his master's degree in positive coaching with a 3.66 GPA, earned All-America honors for the third time in his career, as the Tiger senior finished eighth at 197 pounds at the NCAA Championships. Coming off a knee injury that kept him out of the majority of the 2016-17 season, Miklus roared back onto the scene this season, posting a record of 24-6 while winning his first MAC title. Miklus recorded bonus points in 16 of his 24 victories, including seven technical falls, which ranks as the fifth-most in one season in program history. In March, Miklus was granted a sixth-year of eligibility by the NCAA, and will return to the mat for the Tigers in 2018-19.
