Mizzou scored five runs in the fifth in Saturday night’s shut out
COLUMBIA, Mo. – A five-run inning helped the Mizzou Baseball extend its winning streak to eight games as Mizzou stomped La Salle, 7-0, Saturday night in Taylor Stadium. Five walks and singles from senior C Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.), sophomore 1B Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) and freshman 2B Mark Vierling (St. Louis, Mo.) contributed to the five runs scored in the fifth inning. Starting pitcher, senior RHP Andy Toelken (Green Cove Spring, Fla.) struck out a season-high six batters during his 6.0 innings pitched, touting a no-hitter until the fifth inning. Winning pitcher Toelken moves to 2-0.
Mizzou's pitchers had an impressive weekend, striking out at least 10 batters as well as no-hitting La Salle until the fifth inning in all three games of the series. The Tigers have now won eight straight games and move to 13-3 on the season. La Salle drops to 4-10 on the year.
TURNING POINT
Freshman 2B Mark Vierling (St. Louis, Mo.) singled through the left side to begin the fifth inning. On a groundout by sophomore SS Chris Cornelius (St. Louis, Mo.), Vierling advanced to second. Senior RF Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) walked and then sophomore 1B Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) singled, driving in Vierling and advancing Harris to second. La Salle proceeded to walk two consecutive batters, loading the bases and walking in a run. Next, Senior C Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) singled up the middle, adding two RBIs. The final run of the inning came from a bases-loaded walk as well.
QUOTING MIZZOU
Head Coach Steve Bieser:
"It's always good to see your starter get deep in the game. Watching Plassmeyer go out and run through their lineup game one, that was good to see that he's at that point this early in the season. Then, to see Andy come out, I thought Andy threw the ball really well. We definitely wanted to see some arms today that we wanted to get in and we have a couple of guys we wanted to make sure got work, but we just couldn't get to them. That's a good problem to have."
