Tigers and Retrievers set for three-game set
- Mizzou Baseball, winner of two straight and three of four, continues its season-long 10-game homestand this weekend at Taylor Stadium. Maryland-Baltimore County of the America East Conference will pay a visit for a three-game set, beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. The first two games of the series will be broadcast on KTGR while the Sunday finale will be on both KTGR and SEC Network+.
- Mizzou is coming off of a two-game, midweek series sweep over Alabama A&M. Over the two games, the Tigers drew 27 walks, including 16 Wednesday, their most since drawing a school-record 18 in 2005. The 27 free passes moved Mizzou's season walk total to 78, a national-best. The next-best mark is South Alabama, which has drawn 69. To put the mark into perspective, Mizzou is averaging 7.8 walks per game this season. If you were to stretch that mark out through the entire 56-game season, Mizzou would walk 437 times. The school-record is 384 in 1996. For even more perspective, the 437 walks would account for 39,330 feet of free passes, 4,330 feet higher than the average commercial jet liner cruises.
- Mizzou enters the weekend set with UMBC ranked fourth nationally and second in the SEC in runs scored with 95 through 10 games. Vanderbilt (110 runs scored) is the only SEC team with more and is also the only team from a Power 5 conference with more runs than Mizzou. The Tigers are averaging 10.8 runs per game over the last six contests and are outscoring their opponents, 45-6, over the last four.
- Junior 3B Brian Sharp is arguably the hottest hitter in the SEC over the last week of play. Since his breakout performance Saturday, which earned him SEC Player of the Week honors, Sharp is hitting .909 (10-for-11) with eight runs, 10 RBI, two homers, a double, a triple, 19 total bases and three walks. He has made just one out in his last 14 plate appearances, reaching base at a .929 clip. Add in the fact that he is 1-0 on the mound, throwing 9.2 shutout innings with 14 strikeouts and zero walks in that span, Sharp is emerging as one of the nation's top two-way players. Below are Sharp's ranks in the SEC:
- Batting - 2nd - .517
- Hits - 4th - 15
- Slugging - 6th - .862
- OBP - 7th - .576
- Total Bases - 9th - 25
- Mizzou senior OF Trey Harris is off to an impressive
- Mizzou and UMBC are meeting for the first time in the history of the two programs.
- Mizzou is 20-13 at home under the direction of second-year head coach Steve Bieser. In February and March, Mizzou is 14-3 at home under Bieser's direction. Mizzou will play its next eight games at Taylor Stadium.
