Lewis scored three bonus points victories over the week without giving up a single point
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Wrestling redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week following three bonus point victories without giving up a single point. The honor is the first of Lewis' career and the second this season for Mizzou after senior 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) won the honor on Jan. 4 after capturing a Southern Scuffle individual championship.
Lewis, the 2016 MAC Freshman of the Year, helped Mizzou pick up three road dual victories over the week by earning two major decisions and a technical fall. Lewis began the week with a 12-0 major decision over Austin Weigel of Buffalo on Jan. 12. Lewis scored two takedowns and two near-falls in the opening period to take an 8-0 lead before stretching his lead to 12-0 for the final major decision.
Next, Lewis earned a 17-0 technical fall in the first period over Joey Galasso of Cornell on Jan. 14. Galasso was ranked No. 16 at 149 pounds, but proved to be no challenge to the All-American Lewis. Finally, Lewis earned a 12-0 major decision over Devan Marry of Eastern Michigan on Jan. 15. Lewis scored quickly again against Marry, scoring 10 points in the opening period before yielding the 12-0 major decision.
Lewis, who earned All-America honors by finishing fourth at the 2016 NCAA Championships, improved to 17-2 on the season and 9-0 in duals with the three victories. The Tiger sophomore leads the team in dual points with 38 and falls with six. In a season and a half as an attached wrestler, Lewis is 21-2 in dual competition, including a perfect 11-0 in MAC duals.
Mizzou returns home to the Hearnes Center on Sunday when the Tigers host No. 16 Central Michigan at 1 p.m. (CT).
