The freshman was one of five Tigers to earn podium finishes
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – School records highlighted the final day of SEC Championship competition on Saturday (May 14), as the Tigers closed the weekend with the highest men's team finish in program history for the SEC. Of the highlights out of the weekend were six All-SEC performances, including yet another 400m dash title from freshman Kahmari Montgomery. In all, the Tigers depart Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with 22 PR's, 14 All-Time Top Ten marks, and six school record performances.
Led by podium finishes from freshmen Matthew Ludwig and Kahmari Montgomery, junior Reinhard Van Zyl, and senior Markesh Woodson, the men saw their highest team finish yet in the SEC. Their 55-point tally was good for an eighth place finish, only three points behind No. 6 Georgia and ahead of No. 13 Mississippi State and No. 22 South Carolina.
Certainly highlighting the day's events was freshman Kahmari Montgomery, who repeated his title-winning run in the 400m dash from indoor season. Despite sitting in fifth coming through the 200m mark, Montgomery was able to lay down a strong final 150m to outpace the field and claim his second SEC title. Montgomery's final time of 45.13 was not only good for a new school record, but is also the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season, and the No. 13 mark in the world so far this season.
Senior Markesh Woodson also claimed a podium finish on Saturday, earning his fifth All-SEC honor with a third-place finish in the 100m dash (10.20).
In the pole vault, freshman Matthew Ludwig continued his stellar debut year with his first All-SEC honor. Ludwig entered the weekend ranked third in the pole vault, and he maintained that ranking through the finish of the championship competition, closing at 5.31m (17-5).
The women's team also had a pair of All-SEC finishes, both courtesy of the efforts of sophomore Karissa Schweizer who finished third in both the 1500m (4:29.08) and 5000m (16:17.82) runs.
Podium finishes were not the only highlights out of the third and final day of competition, though, as the women's sprints squad continued rewriting the record books with a series of three school record marks. First up was senior Valerie Thames, who returned to the track on Saturday for finals in the 100m and 400m hurdles after clocking school record times in both during the preliminary rounds. Thames reset her 100m hurdles record with a 13.18 crossing, good for fifth in the field. She returned for the 400m hurdles, just missing her school record mark from Thursday (57.16) with a 57.72 finish for sixth.
The women's 4x100m and 4x400m relays also marked a pair of new school records, beating out the top times from earlier this season. The 4x100m was up first, with freshman Maya Cody, junior LaQuisha Jackson, senior Alyssa Felton, and junior Sandrae Farquharson crossing with a 44.40 record to take seventh in the field.
Finally, it was the women's 4x400m who closed out the weekend's events, with Thames making her final return alongside Farquharson, Jackson, and senior Ayo Adewole. The foursome crossed in 3:34.20 for a new school record and ninth in the field.
