McGhee, Mayes, Lewis, Miklus, and Cox advance to second round, with three scoring bonus points
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Following the first round at the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Madison Square Garden, five Mizzou Wrestling grapplers advanced to the second round with victories. Mizzou is currently tied for fifth place with 10.0 team points. Redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Barlow McGhee (Rock Island, Ill.), redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.), redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa), and junior 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) all picked up first round wins and will wrestle in the round of 16 tonight.
At 125 pounds, McGhee started the Tigers off with a 3-2 victory over Drew Templeman (Wyoming). McGhee trailed 1-0 entering the third period, but the Tiger sophomore escaped to start the period and scored a takedown with just under a minute left to secure the comeback victory. McGhee will face No. 9-seeded Dylan Peters (Northern Iowa) in the second round, a rematch of the MAC Championship match in which McGhee defeated Peters, 9-5.
Mayes grabbed the second win of the day for #TigerStyle, defeating Davion Jeffries (Oklahoma), 3-2. With the score tied, 1-1, with less than a minute remaining in the bout, Mayes scored a takedown to clinch his spot in the round of 16 against Mitch Finesilver (Duke).
In his NCAA debut, Lewis scored a pin in the third period over Casey Fuller (Edinboro) at 5:39. Lewis was up 7-0 when he put Fuller's shoulders squarely on the mat, giving him nine falls on the season. In his second round bout, Lewis will wrestle Jim Wilson (Stanford).
At 184 pounds, Miklus earned a 15-6 major decision over Corey Griego (Oklahoma State). Miklus was down 2-0 in the first period, with riding time in Griego's favor when Miklus scored a reversal and a four-point near fall to lead 6-3 heading into the second period. Miklus stretched his lead to nine points by the end of the bout. Miklus will face Joe Ariola (Buffalo) in the second round. The Tiger grappler beat Ariola twice at the MACs, including a 10-3 decision to win third place.
Cox earned his third fall in his last four matches, pinning Hayden Hrymack (Rutgers) at 1:18. Cox scored a takedown 30 seconds into the match and recorded the fall after his second takedown.
Four Mizzou grapplers; redshirt junior 133-pounder Zach Synon (Cary, Ill.), redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.), redshirt 157-pounder Le'Roy Barnes (Belton, Mo.), and redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.), lost their opening matches and will wrestle on the consolation side of the bracket. Synon will face Corey Keener (Central Michigan), who he defeated 5-4 in TB-1 on Jan. 17. Manley draws Mike Longo (Appalachian State) in his match. Manley defeated Longo, 7-5, on Feb. 12. Barnes will face Justin Staudenmayer (Brown) while Butler faces Jonathan Schleifer (Princeton).
The second session begins at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT and will feature the championship second round and first round of consolations. ESPNU/ESPN3 will carry the broadcast for the session.
