CLEVELAND, Ohio. – In preparation for the Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships on March 5-6 in Ypsilanti, Mich., the conference office has released the pre-seeding for tournament. Eight Mizzou Wrestling grapplers are ranked either first or second in their weight class.
#TigerStyle will look to win its fourth straight MAC Championships title and fifth overall (Big 12 title in 2012) when they hit the mat on Saturday. Last year, five Tiger wrestlers won individual championships as Mizzou took home the team title by a margin of 42 points.
Redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.), redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.), redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa), and redshirt 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) all ranked in at No. 1 in their respective weight classes. Manley, Mayes, Lewis, and Miklus all went undefeated in MAC dual matches, while Cox only suffered one loss. Cox will look to win his third consecutive MAC title after winning the 2014 and 2015 titles at 197 pounds.
Three Tigers rank in at No. 2 in their weight class, including redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Barlow McGhee (Rock Island, Ill.), redshirt junior 133-pounder Zach Synon (Cary, Ill.), and redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.). Synon will enter the tournament as the reigning champion after capturing the 2015 MAC title at 133 pounds.
Redshirt senior 157-pounder Le'Roy Barnes (Belton, Mo.), who moved up to 157 pounds from 141 pounds halfway through the season, ranks in at No. 5 after posting a 4-1 record in MAC duals at 157 pounds. Redshirt senior heavyweight Cody Johnston (Warrensburg, Mo.) will be the ninth seed at heavyweight after just being inserted into the starting lineup.
The MAC Championships will begin at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday. On Sunday, the Championships round will begin at approximately 12:20 p.m. CT. All of the action from Ypsilanti, Mi. will be televised on ESPN3.com
