14 matches are on the slate for the intrasquad scrimmage
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Wrestling will kick off the 2016-17 season by hosting its annual Black & Gold Scrimmage at the Hearnes Center on Thursday. The intrasquad dual will begin at 6 p.m. (CT) and will be free to the public.
In 2016-17, the Tigers return all four NCAA All-Americans from last year's team which captured its fifth consecutive conference championship and finished sixth at the NCAA Championships in New York. Senior 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) became the second wrestler to win two NCAA titles when he outlasted top-seeded Morgan McIntosh (Penn State), 3-2, in the NCAA 197-pound final inside Madison Square Garden. Joining Cox on the podium as All-Americans in the world's most famous arena was redshirt senior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) and redshirt junior 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa).
Mizzou begins the season ranked No. 5 in the Intermat NCAA Division I Tournament Rankings and No. 3 in the Dual Rankings. On Oct. 7, the Tigers were selected as the favorites to win the Mid-American Conference, ranking ahead of Northern Iowa and Central Michigan. In the individual rankings, seven Mizzou grapplers (Jaydin Eierman – 133, Matt Manley – 141, Mayes – 149, Joey Lavallee – 157, Lewis – 165, Miklus – 184, Cox – 197) were ranked first among their respective weight classes.
#TigerStyle will open the regular season with a road conference dual against Old Dominion on Sunday, Nov. 13. Mizzou returns home on Sunday, Nov. 20 to host No. 2 Virginia Tech at Jesse Auditorium.
