COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou Men's Basketball fell 59-51 to Tennessee in a gritty Southeastern Conference contest on Saturday, Jan. 17. Four different Tigers scored eight points or more for head coach Kim Anderson's squad and a second half run fell short as the Tigers dropped to 7-10 (1-3) on the season.
Namon Wright tallied a team-high 13 points and senior Keith Shamburger chipped in eight points, six rebounds and four assists in the loss. After a seesaw first 20 minutes of action, the Tigers clamped down on the defensive end in the second half to surge into the lead.
With the Volunteers ahead 37-29, Mizzou forced three consecutive turnovers and held Tennessee to just two points over a stretch spanning 4:16 of game clock. Freshman Tramaine Isabell provided a much-needed offensive spark off the bench to help the Tigers erase the deficit. Isabell checked in for the first time and immediately knocked down a three-pointer.
Following another Isabell jumper to pull Mizzou within just four, the Tigers hit a trio of threes to take a 44-43 advantage at the 6:07 mark. Mizzou made 6-of-11 from beyond the arc in the second half and Isabell finished with eight points.
With the scored knotted at 46-46, Tennessee closed the game with an emphatic 13-5 run. The Volunteers cashed in from the charity stripe, converting 18-of-20 at the free throw line to seal the victory.
The Tigers return to action at Texas A&M on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Tip off from College Station, Texas, is set for 6 p.m.
