Columbia, Mo. - Competing in the third annual Beauty and the Beast event in front of 4,147 fans, the fifth-ranked Missouri wrestling team suffered its third loss of the season, 22-14, to ninth-ranked Central Michigan (15-2-1). With the loss, the Tigers fall to 17-4 on the year and will have to make a quick turnaround to prepare for second-ranked Iowa State who comes to the Hearnes Center, Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. (CT).
The Tigers got off to a slow start, dropping four straight losses, before senior Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) came up with a 16-0 win by technical fall in 5:23. Chandler's fourth win of the season decided by 15 or more points, Missouri's 157 pound starter shut down Tyler Grayson's offense. A takedown in the first period followed by a quick three point nearfall gave the Tiger a 5-0 lead at the close of the first. Starting down in the second, Chandler managed a reversal in 30 seconds, and turned Grayson for another five count. Chandler readjusted and again turned Grayson for three back points. The third period began with both wrestlers in the neutral position, Chandler shot and scored the takedown and with 1:57 of riding time already accumulated, secured the five team points.
Missouri took its lumps at 165 and 174 pounds, making way for 184 pound redshirt freshman Dorian Henderson (Columbus, Ga.). Henderson squared off with 20th-ranked Vince DiDona and in the second sudden victory overtime period of the bout, landed a takedown for the 4-2 win by decision.
The Tigers rattled off back-to-back wins at 197 pounds and heavyweight, ending the match with 14 team points. Fourth-ranked junior Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) collected a 12-5 win over Eric Simaz, while No. 1 ranked Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) extended his win streak to 21 straight with his 2-1 win by decision over Jarod Trice.
The Tigers will close out the 2008-09 regular season in Sunday's contest with the Cyclones. Fans are encouraged to come early as the University recognizes the six senior members of the Tiger squad.
