COLUMBIA, Mo. - In front of a standing-room-only crowd of 3,457, Louisville's Chris Dominguez hit a game-winning two-run home run in the eighth inning, and the Cardinals hung on for a 4-3 victory in a must-win game Sunday night over Missouri at the NCAA Baseball Columbia Regional. The two teams will meet again Monday at 1 p.m. for the Columbia Regional title.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Jacob Priday hit a solo shot to bring the Tigers within a run. Missouri put runners on first and second before Louisville reliever Kyle Hollander struck out Kyle Mach and Gary Arndt flied out to center field, ending the game.
Hollander (4-1) got the win; Missouri's Greg Folgia (5-4) was credited with the loss.
Tiger freshman Aaron Senne got the scoring started in the second inning with a long solo blast over the pine trees in the right field corner.
Louisville got a run back in the top of the third when leadoff hitter Boomer Whiting hit a double and Logan Johnson drove him in with a one-bagger to center field.
Missouri plated another run in the fourth to make the score 2-1 after loading the bases on two walks and a hit batsmen from Louisville starter Colby Wark. Cardinal Coach Dan McDonnell made a call to the bullpen and brought in Gavin Logsdon. The sophomore got Tiger senior John McKee to ground into a double play, but Ryan Lollis was able score on the play. The inning ended when Louisville center fielder Boomer Whiting made a leaping grab at the wall to rob Senne of his second homer on the day.
A McKee throwing error allowed Louisville to tie the game in the sixth. With one-out and Dominguez on first, the Cardinals called for a hit-and-run. Pete Rodriguez grounded out to short and Dominguez rounded second and headed for third. McKee airmailed his throw to Tiger third baseman Kyle Mach and as the ball squirted into the left field foul area Dominguez scored easily.
McKee hit a one-out single in the seventh and Senne followed with a high pop fly to left fielder Isaiah Howes. Howes lost the ball in the lights and Senne was credited with a double; McKee moved to third on the play. Louisville Coach Dan McDonnell pulled reliever Andrew Salgueiro mid at-bat with Mach and insterted Hollander. Hollander recorded a strike out and got the nine-hole hitter, Arndt, to ground out to second to end the inning.
Berger worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the third when he induced a 5-3 double play ball from Cardinal shortstop Chad Cates. He also escaped a jam in the fifth when Whiting reached third with one out, but the Illinois State-transfer struck out Jason Burton and Howes to keep the Tiger lead at 2-1.
