Tigers Sweep Jayhawks, Clinch Border Showdown Trophy

Lawrence, Kan. - Scoring in the final inning of regulation play, the Missouri softball team (32-18, 8-1) completed a sweep of Kansas (27-18-1, 3-8) after blanking the Jayhawks, 1-0, in game two at Arrocha Ballpark. The Tigers managed to hold Kansas scoreless in both games with junior Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) earning the game one win (3-0) and freshman Jana Hainey (Raymore, Mo.) credited with the victory in game two. Missouri's fourth sweep of the season helped the Tigers clinch the Midwest Ford Border Showdown, 19-12.
In her first Big 12 start of the season, Hainey struck out the side in the bottom of the first inning and totaled six strikeouts on the day. The game was Hainey's first complete game of the campaign and lifts her to 5-5 on the season.
Missouri's sole run of the game came on a passed ball by KU catcher Tiffany Craner. With the bases loaded and freshman Julie Silver (Chesterfield, Mo.) at the plate, Craner was unable to hold on to pitcher Kassie Humphrey's throw allowing Tiger shortstop Andee Allen (Windsor, Mo.) to score from third. The inning started with Allen's single up the middle. Advancing to second on Bruck's sacrifice bunt, senior Alli Kennewell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was intentionally walked bringing up pinch hitter Sara Simons (Kearney, Mo.) who also reached base on balls. The inning came to an end on Silver's pop fly to second base.
Hainey was able to shut down the Jayhawks in the bottom of the seventh striking out the first batter, forcing a fly ball and then closing out the game on a botched play that resulted in an out at first.
The Tigers will return home to Columbia to host fifth-ranked Texas A&M in a two game series beginning Saturday, April 21, at 2 p.m. (CT) on University Field. Missouri is down to its final eight games of the season with six set to be contested at home.
