ANN ARBOR, Mich. - With a season-best score, the No. 18 Missouri gymnastics team upset No. 11 Michigan 196.675-196.100 on Friday night in Ann Arbor, Mich. Sophomore Adrianne Perry claimed the all-around crown with a career-high 39.550 and won or tied for the vault and floor titles.
"We did a fantastic job tonight," Missouri head coach Rob Drass said. "The team grew up tonight; this is a team that belongs at the national championships. We beat a team that's a very, very good team. To finish on beam, away like that just shows how good this team is. I'm super proud of this team."
Opening competition on bars, Mizzou recorded a 49.000 on the event to trail the Wolverines by a tenth of a point. Perry and freshman each notched 9.850s to tie Michigan's Becky Bernard for second, followed by junior Julie Abaray and sophomore Alicia Hatcher, who scored a 9.800 apiece.
The Tigers had their best vault performance of the season and trailed Michigan by 25-hunderths of a point after the second rotation with a 49.225. Perry tied for the event title with a 9.900 and senior Whitney Crater scored a 9.875 to tie for third. Freshman Danielle Guider set a career high on vault for the second week in a row as the recorded a 9.850.
Mizzou kept up its great evening as the squad tied its fifth-highest floor total in program history with a 49.350 to enter the final rotation with almost a two-tenth advantage. Three Tigers set or tied career-highs, led by Perry's 9.925 and Abaray's 9.900. The score for Perry won her the event title and Abaray tied for second. Pezzullo notched a 9.875 to tie her personal mark and junior Ashley Khederian posted a season-high 9.850.
Ending the meet on beam, Missouri stayed hot to record a 49.100 and assure the upset of the Wolverines. Perry notched a 9.875 to tie her personal best and finish in second place, while Hatcher and Pezzullo tied for third with 9.825s.
The Tigers finish out the regular season at No. 12 Arkansas in a quad meet with the Gym'Backs, Southeast Missouri State and Texas Women's on Friday, March 23 at 7 p.m. Mizzou then returns to the comfy confines of the Hearnes Center as the squad hosts the 2007 Big 12 Conference Gymnastics Championship at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.
