Palo Alto, Calif. - Taking on their second top-20 opponent of the season, the Missouri softball team (4-5) fell, 5-0, to 12th-ranked Stanford in game two of the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Held to only two hits, the Tigers gave up five runs on nine hits with freshman Alaina Jacobson (Crocker, Mo.) credited with her first loss of the season (1-1). Jacobson threw only one inning but allowed four earned runs on five hits.
The first time in 10 games that the Tigers had been held to fewer than three hits, only sophomore Andee Allen (Barnhart, Mo.) and senior Sarah Stringer (Auxvasse, Mo.) were able to connect on Missy Penna's (4-1) pitches. Allen made contact for a first inning, one out single to right field, while Stringer's hit came in the second inning of action. Penna struck out 11 Tigers and walked three in her seven innings in the circle.
Missouri sophomore Megan Dennis (Liberty, Mo.) entered the game for the Tigers in the second and threw four innings of work before being relieved by junior Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) in the sixth.
"Right now we're really struggling in the circle," Head Coach Ehren Earleywine said. "We have a young staff and they're working to get better. There's a learning curve though and it's going to take some time to settle in and get used to the collegiate style of play."
The Tigers will take on Santa Clara in their third game of the Stanford Invitational beginning Saturday, Feb. 17 at Noon (CT). Live stats are available on www.mutigers.com through GametTracker.
