Baton Rouge, La. - The Missouri softball team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 9-3 game to Memphis (2-1) at the Easton Tiger Classic in Tiger Park. The Tigers managed seven hits, including three doubles from senior outfielder Leanne Bowers (Arnold, Mo.), redshirt junior Micaela Minner (Sanger, Texas) and sophomore shortstop Andee Allen (Barnhart, Mo.), but stranded six runners in scoring position.
Sophomore lefty Megan Dennis (Liberty, Mo.) was credited with her first loss of the campaign after giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits. Throwing 1.1 innings of work, Dennis was relieved by freshman Alaina Jacobson (Crocker, Mo.) who allowed four runs, all earned, on 11 hits in 4.2 innings of play.
Missouri owned a one run lead heading into the bottom of the first inning. Working with two outs on the board, three-hole hitter Minner was awarded first base after receiving four balls from pitcher Nicki Johnson. After stealing second, Minner was sent home on senior designated player Kathy Masterson's (St. Louis, Mo.) single down the right field line. The inning came to a close when Masterson was caught stealing.
Memphis put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning with Leila Dolfo and Bridgette McNulty scoring two unearned runs. Dolfo led off with a double to left field and scored on a fielding error by Allen that also allowed McNulty to reach first. McNulty scored on Kara Ross' one out single to center field.
Down 5-1 entering the top of the third, senior second baseman Sarah Stringer led off with a single through the left side and took third on a throwing error by Johnson. Allen's second double of the season drove in Stringer for the Tigers' second run of the game.
Looking to rally in the seventh, the Tigers returned to the top of the lineup where Bowers led off with a double through the left side. With freshman Michaele Vock (Morrison, Ill.) pinch hitting for Allen, Vock grounded out to second, but allowed Bowers to reach third, later scoring on Minner's double down the left field line.
Up next, Missouri will face ninth-ranked host LSU in a 1:45 p.m. (CT) game.
