:: Postgame - Pinkel | Daniel
Missouri vs. Iowa State
Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007
Attendance: 53,386
Series Notes:
- The Tigers now lead the series against the Cyclones with a 57-34-9 record. Today's meeting marked the 100th time that the Tigers and Cyclones have met.
First Quarter Notes:
- Chase Daniel completed his first 12 passes of the game. The 12-12 performance coupled with his final three completions last week against Texas Tech ties Kent Kiefer for the Missouri school record for consecutive pass completions at 15. The 15 completions over the previous two games accounted for 192 yards.
- Tiger running back Tony Temple saw his first action in two games after nursing an ankle injury. Temple ran the ball three times for 21 yards in the first quarter. Temple also scored on the Tigers second possession on a seven-yard touchdown run with 6:52 left in the first.
- Jimmy Jackson continued to have a nose for the end zone as he scored on a one-yard scamper on the Tigers first drive. The score gave Jackson four touchdowns in the last two games.
- The Tigers held Iowa State scoreless on its first possession of the game. The Tigers have not allowed an opponent to score on its opening drive in all eight games this season, while Mizzou has scored on four of its first possessions including today.
- Stryker Sulak continued his great defensive play by sacking Iowa State quarterback Brett Meyer. The sack gave Sulak four on the season, tying him with defensive tackle Lorenzo Williams for most by a Tiger this season.
Second Quarter Notes:
- Tiger wide out Jason Ray caught his third pass early in the second quarter. The three pass receptions are a career high for Ray.
- Jeff Wolfert hit a 48-yard field goal as time expired giving the Tigers a 20-14 lead. The field goal was a season-long for Wolfert. His previous best was a 47-yarder against Western Michigan in the third game of the season.
- Charles Gaines was a bright spot for the Tiger defense in the first half. Gaines had four tackles in the first half alone, more than doubling the three that he had accumulated all season.
- Chase Daniel completed 16-20 passes in the first half giving him an 80-percent completion rate.
- Despite only having the ball for 9:56 in the first half, the Tigers continued their quick strike offense, putting up 17 points on that 9:56.
- Mizzou finished the first half scoring on all three of its redzone possessions. Both Jackson and Tony Temple had touchdown runs from within the 10-yard line, while Wolfert added a 36-yard field goal.
Third Quarter Notes:
- On Iowa State's first possession, Stryker Sulak forced a Brett Meyer fumble on his second sack of the game. The fumble was recovered in the endzone by Lorenzo Williams giving the Tigers 14 consecutive games with a takeaway. The defensive touchdown was also the Tigers second in as many games. With the sack, Sulak moves into first place for sacks by a Tiger on the season.
- Tight end Martin Rucker caught his 14th career touchdown on a screen pass at the 5:57 mark in the third quarter. The touchdown ties Rucker for all-time touchdowns in a career with Mel Gray, who played from 1968-70. The catch gave Rucker, a Mackey Award finalist, four catches for 48 yards. Rucker finished the game with seven catches for 66 yards.
Fourth Quarter Notes:
- On the Cyclone's first drive of the fourth quarter, the Tigers registered two swatted balls at the line of scrimmage, giving them four on the game. The swats were recorded by Ziggy Hood and had another by Sulak.
- Jeremy Maclin scored on a 17-yard touchdown run, giving him four on the season. Maclin has a total of 10 touchdowns this season, the most by any Tiger at a skill position. Maclin finished the game with 65 yards receiving, 26 on the ground and 79 of punt and kick returns, giving him a total of 170 all-purpose yards.
- Ziggy Hood recorded the third Tiger sack of the game on a fourth and one for the Cyclones to end any chance of the Cyclones scoring and extending the game.
Final Game Notes:
- With the win, the Tigers improve to 7-1 on the season while head coach Gary Pinkel moves to 4-3 all time against Iowa State and 44-36 at Mizzou. The 44 wins ranks Pinkel in fourth all-time on the Missouri win list, leaving him just two wins shy of tying Warren Powers for third place.
- With the win at home in the "Zou," the Tigers improve to 24-6 at Memorial Stadium since the 2003 season.
- The Tigers had only one penalty on the game for only seven yards. The Tigers entered the game ranked sixth in the nation with only 36.3 penalty yards per game. The seven yards today will decrease that amount drastically. Iowa State came into the game as the least penalized team in the nation at 30.6 yards per game, but racked up eight total penalties for 77 yards, more than doubling its season output.
- Temple, who sat out the previous two games with an ankle injury, ran the ball eight times for 46 yards and a touchdown. In his first game back, Temple was the Tigers leading rushers.
- The Tigers finished the game converting on all five of it's red zone appearances.
- Sean Weatherspoon recorded 12 total tackles for the Tigers with one tackle for a loss. The 12 tackles tied a season high for Weatherspoon, a mark that he also set against Illinois State and Nebraska. Weatherspoon's 84 tackles on the season is tops for the Tigers and ranks him third amongst the Big 12 Conference elite.
- Tiger DB Castine Bridges had his best game as a Tiger. Bridges recorded a career-high seven tackles.
