Columbia, Mo. - Playing No. 24 Southern Illinois (38-2) in a makeup game originally scheduled for March 22, the Missouri softball team (20-19) dropped a 12-0 game in five innings to the Saluki's on University Field. Managing only one hit, junior second baseman Sarah Stringer (Auxvasse, Mo.) ended SIU ace Cassidy Scoggin's no-hitter with a fifth inning two out single through the right side.
Missouri's ninth ranked opponent of the season, Southern Illinois scored early with a single run in the first inning and came on strong offensively in the second, scoring six runs on four hits and two Tiger errors. Two Saluki's, first baseman Katie Louis and leadoff hitter Tiffanie Dismore combined for three home runs on the day. Dismore homered in back-to-back innings and was credited with five RBI, while Louis' two RBI home run came in the second. Southern Illinois scored three runs in the top of the third frame and two in the fourth but were shutdown in the fifth and final inning of play after Missouri freshman pitcher Megan Dennis (Liberty, Mo.) forced two fly balls to the outfield and struckout Louis swinging. SIU finished the game with 12 runs on 14 hits and four Missouri errors.
Today's game marked Dennis' 33rd appearance in the circle this season. Dennis twirled four complete innings but gave up eight earned runs off 12 hits. Junior Kathy Masterson (St. Louis, Mo.) hurled one inning, and threw 14 pitches before Dennis reentered in relief.
The game was originally postponed due to rain and snow in the Columbia, Mo., area March 22. The Tigers have only been held to one hit two other times this season (North Carolina, Feb. 24 and No. 1 Texas, April 9).
Missouri will travel to Kansas Wednesday, April 19, and play game two of the Midwest Ford Showdown beginning at 5 p.m. (CST) at Arrocha Ballpark. Metro Sports in Kansas City will air the tape-delayed game Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m. (CST).
