Columbia, Mo. - Opening the 2005 campaign with the annual Black and Gold scrimmage, the Missouri softball team played a seven-inning game in front of 178 fans at Faurot Field. The Gold team, led by freshman pitcher Jen Bruck came from behind to top the Black team by a score of 8-3. Three Tigers, senior Heather Kunkel, junior Kendra Power and sophomore Kathy Masterson went yard on the day, helping add to the Gold team's dominating performance.
Down by two runs entering the bottom of the second inning, sophomore catcher Masterson (St. Louis, Mo.) dropped a bomb over the left field fence for the Gold team's first run of the game. Unable to produce in the third, the Gold team tied the game at two in the fourth as Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill) smashed a ball off of sophomore lefty Erica Peterson (Irving, Texas) far over the right field fence.
The fifth inning provided further excitement for the fans as the Gold team drove in five runs to lead the game, 6-3. With one out and runners on first and third, Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) ripped a double to right center, driving in redshirt freshman Micaela Minner (Sanger, Texas) for the Gold team's fourth run of the day. Kunkel was running close on the heels of Minner, but got tossed out at home on a throw from sophomore outfielder A.J. White (Tallmadge, Ohio), to freshman second baseman Amy Henke (Florrisant, Mo.) to sophomore catcher Alyson Tobyne (Gilbert, Ariz.).
Gold team leadoff hitter Power (Kansas City, Mo.) put the final run of the game on the board with her moonshot to left field in the sixth inning.
"I'm excited about the way both teams played today," Head Coach Ty Singleton said. "We had beautiful weather and a great turnout which added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. I think at this point, everyone on the team and coaching staff is really looking forward to our first game of the season next weekend in Florida."
The Missouri softball team will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Seminole Classic Tournament, Feb. 11-12 and take on teams from Florida State and Nicholls State.
