The University of Missouri men's and women;s cross country teams had a successful day today at the Brother Doyle Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in New York . The women's team won their second consecutive meet of the season. The Tigers beat three nationally ranked teams scoring 62 points, five ahead of runner-up and 22nd ranked Wake Forest. Tiger freshman Amanda Bales was the top Tiger finishing fourth setting a school record time of 21:08 in the 6K. Five Tiger, Bales, Valerie Lauver in 6th, Amy Chipman in 10th, Katherine Bonugli in 19th, and Jackie Pirtle in 24th, finished in the top 25. Missouri cross country coach Jared Wilmes said, "This was a great performance. Anytime you beat teams that are ranked that helps the team qualify for the NCAA Championships. Amanda Bales time was faster than (nominee for 2002 NCAA Woman of the Year) than Ann Marie Brooks in the 6K."
The Missouri men's team also had a successful day finishing seventh out of 25 teams. Tiger freshman Tim Ross led the Mizzou men for the second straight meet finishing 18th and sophomore David Mertens turned in an impressive performance finishing 42nd. Coach Wilmes said, "We ran against a lot of good teams and we were close to all of the teams around us. It was a positive experience on both sides." The men and women cross country teams are in action next Saturday at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago.
