Gibson was a flame-throwing righty who became one of the most dominant pitchers in Mizzou’s tradition-rich pitching program during his three years on campus. A native of Greenfield, Indiana, he was a Golden Spikes National Player of the Year semi-finalist as a junior in 2009, when he went 11-3 with a 3.21 earned run average and a school-record 131 strikeouts. He was an integral part of Mizzou teams that reached NCAA Regional play all three years with him in the starting rotation (2007-08-09). He was a second-team Louisville Slugger all-American in 2009, and a first-team all-Big 12 Conference selection that same season. His 304 career strikeouts and 28 career wins were second in Missouri history. His career record was 28-10, including 8-3 as a freshman, 9-4 as a sophomore and 11-3 as a junior. He pitched for USA Baseball’s National Collegiate Team, going 5-0 on the mound while earning the win in Team USA’s Gold Medal game at the 2008 FISU World Championships. He was a 2009 first-round MLB draft pick by the Minnesota Twins, taken as the No. 22 pick overall in the draft. He was the Twins’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2010, and through 2019, had 67 career wins at the major league level. Since then, he has pitched for the Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies and was an American League all-star in 2021.
